A frame for the intermediate storage of spent fuel elements or fuel rods from nuclear power reactors consits of square containers with a perforated base plate for the entrance of cooling water. Three or four horizontal holts below the baseplate intersect with their centre lines in the centre of the container. Foot plates at the bottom of the storage tank have wedge-shaped notches which receive and lock the horizontal bolts. This secures each container against horizontal shocks. Their interlock with the foot plates is effected solely by their own weight. Their release is automatic when the containers are lifted.
