Plants, esp. pine plantations, are protected against wood boring insects and at the same time receive metered amounts of a fertiliser by a hose, made of plastic foil (polyethylene polystyrene). The sheath is made of two foil stampings, welded together on the sides and with a turnup at the top to form a protruding collar over which the beetles cannot crawl. The bottom of the hose is also turned up and perforated at the outside to form pockets for a certain amount of a granulated fertiliser. This prevents the drastic rise in timber loss due to beetles since the use of DTT has been banned. It saves the risky and more random method of scattering fertiliser from aircraft.
