The invention relates to a process for the safer preparation of the compounds of (di)cyclopentadiene and 1,2-butadiene mentioned in the title. The danger of explosion of the reaction mixture due to ignition by external means is excluded by the carrying out of the process in the presence of a desensitising agent. This consists of a monoolefinically unsaturated C4- to C8-hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof and of a hydrocarbon from the group consisting of saturated C4- to C8-hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene and mixtures of these hydrocarbons. The process permits the preparation of the process product(s) in high yield, based on reacted 1,2-butadiene.
