The method serves to reduce compressed air losses when driving underground, compressed air-supported cavities. The in-place soil in the extraction space is removed at a heading face. The foot of the heading face is filled with fluid. The part of the heading face remaining above the level of the fluid is covered during advancing with a curtain-like, flexible, at least approximately air-tight diaphragm. As a result of its flexibility, it can adapt continuously to the changing surface of the heading face during the advance and thus ensure satisfactory sealing of the heading face at any time.
