In a printer, an ink-ribbon guide (2) and an ink-ribbon mask (4) are each attached to the print head (1) between the platen and the recording medium on the one hand and the print head (1) on the other hand, an opening (4a) being formed for the printing elements (9) which are movable within a stroke path for the print, and the ink-ribbon mask (4) being attached at one end to the ink-ribbon guide (2) in such a way that the former rests resiliently on the ink-ribbon guide (2) and a defined gap (13) is formed for the ink ribbon (5) between the ink-ribbon guide (2) and the ink-ribbon mask (4). In order to maintain stability in the system ink-ribbon guide / thin ink-ribbon mask despite narrow-tolerance spacings for very small needle strokes, i.e. for high printing speeds, and also to guarantee easy input and output of the ink ribbon (5) by the operating personnel, it is proposed that the ink-ribbon mask (4) is set, by means of projections (15) under prestressing force, to a gap (13) in the region of the printing elements (9a), which gap is 0.01 to 0.05 mm greater than the thickness (14) of the ink ribbon, and that the projections (15) have curved contours (18) extending in the input and output direction (16, 17) of the ink ribbon (5).
