In a flat-weft knitting machine (cotton system) with an arrangement of operating elements, such as a needle bar with spring-beard needles, loop sinker in a sinker head, knocking-over sinkers and thread guides, and with a laying device for producing lay patterns, consisting of a lay bar with laying needles, the laying device is characterised by a lay bar (13) which carries laying needles (4, 4') and which is movable in the longitudinal direction from a servomotor (20) via drive elements (21, 21a, 22, 23, 35-40) and via an electronic control circuit (24) connected to the servomotor (20), in such a way that the laying needles (4) of the lay bar (13) can be put in any position over the entire working width.
