PURPOSE:To obtain the title resin excellent in water absorptivity, water absorption rate and water insolubility and useful for diapers, sanitary articles, etc., by polymerizing a mixture of (meth)acrylic acid with a water-soluble (meth) acrylate in the presence of a specified resin. CONSTITUTION:(Meth)acrylic acid (A) is partially (60-90mol%) neutralized with an alkali metal hydroxide, an amine or the like to obtain a mixture of component A with a water-soluble (meth)acrylate (B) at a molar ratio of 40-10/60-90. This mixture is polymerized at 50-90 deg.C for 0.5-5hr in a solvent (e.g., n-hexane) in the presence of 0.1-25wt%, based on the mixture, PVA resin containing 0.1-30mol% carboxyl groups (e.g., monomethyl maleate- modified PVA) and a polymerization initiator (e.g., ammonium persulfate).
