To measure and control on the arc side the root-side fusion, remote from the arc, of joint welds preferably accessible only on one side, tracers are attached according to Figs. 1 and 2 to the plate surface, remote from the arc, of the root area before the welding. During the welding the tracers are absorbed by the weld pool as a result of fusion and are transported to the arc-side pool surface, vaporise there and are detected by arc diagnostics and are also fed as measured values after further processing to the welding process. Compared with the prior art, a means is thus created of specifically activating and producing predetermined weld-root geometries on the reverse side of the weld of inaccessible welded joints by process feedback.
