The invention relates to a method for producing a numerically programmable clamping force and an apparatus for carrying it out, in particular for the tailstock of machine tools which is connected to a mechanical clamping unit. The method according to the invention consists essentially in that a movement proportional to the clamping force is produced in the clamping unit, whereupon digital voltage pulses proportional to this movement are produced, which are stored in the form of binary codes in a counter, after which they are compared via a coincidence circuit with voltage levels preset in the form of binary codes, a shut-off signal being produced at the coincidence point of the preset and the measured electric voltage signals and, by means of this signal, the further operation of the mechanical clamping unit being shut off and its position fixed. The apparatus suitable for carrying out the method has a mechanical clamping unit, known per se, which contains an electric motor provided with a parking brake, a gearing provided with a transmission, a ribbed sleeve rotatably mounted in the gearing, and also a threaded spindle which is axially displaceable against the force of the springs mounted in the ribbed sleeve and connects the ribbed sleeve to the sleeve of the tailstock, according to the invention recesses (11) being formed in the outer shell of the ribbed sleeve (6) and said row of recesses (11) ...
