The traumatic effects of the extra-corporal fragmentation of kidney stones by means of focused liquid shock waves are eliminated by passing said shock waves through a high-pass filter before they enter the human body, said high-pass filter being advantageously designed as a liquid wave guide with a weak acoustic margin. A foam plate (5) with a high air bubble content is used, in which a bore (4) for the wave guide is made. By this process and device, low frequency shock wave components are eliminated from the shock wave field, so that only high frequency components are focused. This results in painless shock wave therapy, thereby rendering anaesthesia of the patient unnecessary.
