Method of a measuring dimension index, defined by the ratio of desired utilisation to actual utilisation, of a heating unit of a heating installation, in particular a heating unit for liquid or gaseous fuels, effected by measuring the desired utilisation by continuous measurement of the outside temperature at constant time intervals which are shorter than a preset minimum measuring time, formation of an average value and multiplication by a climate factor, as well as by the simultaneous measurement of the actual utilisation by continuous measurement of the switch-on period of the heating unit in relation to the preset minimum measuring time.
