Electrostatic precipitator for precipitating solid or liquid particles (3) suspended in a gas flow (1), having an ion source (5), in the simplest form as a spray electrode (8), and a connecting device arranged at right angles to the flow direction, consisting either of a plurality of rows, arranged sequentially in the flow direction, of precipitating electrodes (9) at different potentials phi I, phi II..., or of a row of guide electrodes (12) having an aerodynamic profile and a downstream row of precipitating electrodes (9) having a groove-shaped profile, the latter two being configured aerodynamically in such a way that, seen in the flow direction, the space remaining free for the gas flow (1) forms a converger (21) and a diffuser (22) in series.
