Hydrophilic polyurethane acrylate composition which will form a hydrogel when immersed in water while being permeable to gases, ions and nonionic materials of various molecular weights. According to the invention this composition contains approximately 100 parts by weight of hydrophilic polyurethane and approximately 10 to approximately 50 parts by weight of an acrylate. The invention applies especially to the production of burn dressings, implants, contraceptives, intrauterine devices, cannulas, oral application systems, gas-permeable membranes, surgical dressings, dialysis membranes, contact lenses and for the coating of boats' hulls.
