The invention relates to the use of xanthine bases as active principle of a pharmaceutical, in particular dermatological or cosmetic, composition, as well as to such compositions. This xanthine base possesses the following chemical structure: IMAGE where R1, R2 and R3 each independently represent H or a C1-C5 alkyl radical, preferably a methyl; preferred combinations of R1, R2 and R3 being: a) R1 = CH3, R2 = CH3, R3 = H (theophylline) b) R1 = H, R2 = CH3, R3 = CH3 (theobromine) c) R1 = CH3, R2 = CH3, R3 = CH3 (caffeine). The xanthine bases have a local slimming activity as a result of the activation of cell metabolism and of the stimulation of the cutaneous microcirculation, so that valuable pharmaceutical, in particular dermatological or cosmetic, compositions may be prepared.
