The present invention relates to a method for automatically identifying, from a distance, a moving body forming part of a group of moving bodies and a device for implementing this method. Method, characterised in that it consists in recognising an audible signal specific to the said body 1, under the control of a single processing member 3. The method consists, more particularly, in equipping each moving body 1 with an emitter 2 of a specific sound wave which is different from one emitter 2 to another, then, for each moving body 1 to be identified, under the control of the processing member 3, in picking up a signal containing the sound wave emitted by the emitter 2, in transforming the picked-up signal which has been made discrete on a time base into the frequency domain so as to obtain the vector of the spectral parameters of the sound wave emitted by the emitter 2, then in recognising this vector of the spectral parameters amongst all the vectors of the spectral parameters previously stored in memory and each one corresponding to a different sound wave emitted by each emitter 2 with which each moving body 1 is fitted.
