The loft conversion for a house without suitable load-bearing walls of brick or masonry, uses a suspended floor in the loft space. This is made by suspending lightweight metal joists (4) from additional lengthwise beams (6), suing rods (5) with threaded ends. Before the angled supports of the roof trusses (8) are removed, additional strengthening timbers (1,2,3) are introduced to provide the necessary rigidity and support, with the sloping sides of the roof trusses also reinforced by additional lengthwise timbers to take the weight of the floor. After the trusses have been reinforced and the metal joists installed, the floor can be constructed and the loft space fitted out. ADVANTAGE/USE - Suitable for timber-framed houses.
