Device for propelling boats. The invention relates to a device making it possible to propel boats, which device brings improvements as far as efficiency, reliability, and safety are concerned. The device consists of a heat engine 1 actuating a hydraulic pump 2 which drives a fluid ducted by the hydraulic pipes 3. This fluid flows through an inverter/varying device 4 which controls the speed and direction of rotation of a hydraulic motor. This hydraulic motor is located in the axis of a turbine which it actuates. The turbine and hydraulic motor assembly constitutes a hydraulic propulsion unit 11 which can be raised in order to take it out of the water and can be directed in order to couple it with the appliance to be steered 8.
