In a method for welding a pair of base metals 1 to be welded from only one side without turning over the base metals, thereby forming a penetration bead, the width of the penetation bead is maintained at a predetermined value. The welding is effected by holding an inorganic material such as a flux 2 in close contact with the back of the base metals by a metal plate 3. A part of the arc struck between the base metals 1 reaches the metal plate 3 through the flux 2. The voltage or current generated by the arc has a correlation with the width of the penetration bead, and thus the bead width is maintained uniform by maintaining constant the voltage 6 or current generated between the base metals and the metal plate during the welding, by controlling welding current, arc voltage or welding speed.
