In a mounting assembly for mounting a gas cylinder a cradle 20 is fixed to a frame 1 having a conventional harness for securing the frame to the body of a user of a breathing system supplied with breathable gas from the gas cylinder. The cradle 20 has at least two vertical rods 32 located in it and a latch 36 is mounted on one of the vertical rods 32. A band 50 for engaging a portion of the cylindrical surface of the gas cylinder has at one end a catch 52 for engagement by the latch 36 and at the other end a hook 51 for engaging one of the vertical rods 32 located in the cradle 20. The band 50 is slidably positioned within the cradle 20 so that the band 50 may be moved from one position where the hook 51 engages a first vertical rod 32 to another position where the hook 51 engages a second vertical rod 32 so that the band 50 is adaptable for mounting gas cylinders of different diameters.
