A process is described whereby a workpiece is immersed in an electrode, any interlocking between the workpiece and electrode and/or damage to flanks of the workpiece is avoided, and the desired accuracy and surface condition are obtained, by turning negative flanks of a tooth through an angle &ggr; in relation to a center of the negative tooth space. A first, a second, a third and even a fourth movement may be combined with the aforementioned steps such that there is constant adaptation of the parameters of a machining generator depending on a remaining path to be covered.
