PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ester, by adding acrylic or methacrylic acid to a specific amount of a suspension of an alkali metallic (bi)carbonate in an epihalohydrin at a controlled temperature, to carry out the neutralization reaction, and removing the formed water by the azeotropic distillation, and adding water to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic acid or mehacrylic acid is slowly added to and neutralized with a suspension of an alkali metallic (bi)carbonate in an amount of at least 1.1 equivalents based on the acrylic or methacrylic acid in an epihalohydrin at a temperature not exceeding 108 deg.C , and the formed water is then removed by the azeotropic distillation with the epihalohydrin to give the alkali metallic salt of the acid. A catalyst is then added to the reaction system to react the alkali metallic salt with the epihalohydrin and give a glycidyl ester thereof. Preferably, a polymerization inhibitor is present in the reaction system in both the neutralization and the esterification reactions. EFFECT:The formation of by-products can be inhibited by controlling the temperature of the neutralization reaction.
