PURPOSE:To enable easy production of an element having a good appearance grade and productivity by holding a prescribed photosetting vinyl compd. and nematic liquid crystal material in a uniformly dissolved state between a pair of substrates with electrodes thereby immobilizing the phase sepn. with the cured matter. CONSTITUTION:The melt of the photosetting vinyl compd. which is so selected that the refractive index of the cured matter to be obtd. coincides with any of the refractive index of the ordinary light of the liquid crystal material to be used, the refractive index of the extraordinary light thereof or the refractive index of the case in which the liquid crystal material is randomly oriented and the nematic liquid crystal material is used as the mixture. This melt is held between a pair of the substrates with electrodes and light is projected thereto to cure the photosetting vinyl compd. by which the phase sepn. of the nematic liquid crystal material and the cured matter is immobilized. Since the nematic liquid crystal material and the cured matter are thereby immobilized in the finely nonuniform state, the distribution of the liquid crystal and the cured matter is uniformized and the element having the excellent appearance grade and productivity is easily produced.
