摘要

PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound in high crystallization conversion and high yield, in the form of high purity crystal, by reacting mercaptophenol with a bis(haloethoxy)methane in a specific solvent in the presence of an alkali, adding a controlled amount of water to the reaction product and cooling the mixture. CONSTITUTION:Mercaptophenol is made to react with a bis(haloethoxy)methane in 40-2,000ml (based on 1mol of the mercaptophenol) of a water-soluble organic solvent (e.g., methanol or tetrahydrofuran) in the presence of an alkali (e.g., NaOH) at 0-150 deg.C under normal pressure for 0.1-12hr. The solution produced by the reaction is added with water heated to =40 deg.C in an amount to get a weight ratio of the water-soluble organic solvent to water of 15/85-70/30. The mixture is slowly cooled at a cooling rate of =20 deg.C/hr to obtain the objective compound [1,7-di(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,5-dioxaheptane] useful as a color-developer for heat-sensitive recording paper in the form of crystal having relatively large particle diameter without using recrystallization process.
