PURPOSE:To make an apparatus compact and light and to make it possible to test the functions of magnetoresistance elements readily, by using a synthetic magnetic field that is generated by an exciting current flowing through a returning planar conductor as a bias magnetic field for the magnetoresistance elements. CONSTITUTION:Magnetoresistance elements 11 are barber-pole type magne toresistance elements utilizing ferromagnetic thin films such as Peramlloy or a pair of magnetoresistance elements utilizing the Hall effect of a semiconduc tor element comprising InSb, GaAs or the like. A returning planar conductor 13 has a planar zigzag pattern. As a bias magnetic field Hb for setting the operating points of the magnetoresistance elements 11, a magnetic field Hv or Hh which is generated by an exciting current I flowing through the returning planar conductor 13 formed on a substrate 12 is used. The returning angle thetaof the returning planar conductor 13 is set in the range of 45+ or -15 deg. so that the direction of the magnetic field Hv or Hh is changed.
