PRODUCTION OF HIGHLY WATER-ABSORBING POLYMER MATERIAL HAVING HIGH WATER ABSORPTION RATE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled material useful for sanitary articles, by contacting a crosslinked product of plyacrylic acid, an alkali metal salt of polyacrylic acid or a copolymer thereof with water and a hydrophilic organic solvent, removing the solvent and drying and grinding the product. CONSTITUTION:A crosslinked product (A) of polyacrylic acid, an alkali metal salt of polyacrylic acid or a copolymer thereof is contacted with a mixed solvent (B) consisting of water and a hydrophilic organic solvent (e.g., substance in which a mixture of polyethylene oxide, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene derivative or a dialkylsulfosuccinic acid with a normally solid higher fatty acid or higher fatty acid ester is dissolved or dispersed) or component A is swollen in water and then contacted with component B. Then the solvent is removed and the product is dried and ground. The highly water-absorbing material thus produced is useful to which a high water absorption rate is essential, e.g. sanitary material an agent for separating water in oil, a water retaining agent for soil, etc.
