WHISKER OF MAGNESIUM BORATE AND ITS PREPARATION

PURPOSE:To obtain whisker having improved alkali resistance, heat resistance, neutron absorption ability, insulating properties, sheen properties, and light transmission properties, by reacting a magnesium feed part with a boric acid feed part in the presence of a melting agent under heating. CONSTITUTION:A magnesium feed part selected from magnesium oxide, hydroxide, and its inorganic acid salt is reacted with a boric acid feed part selected from boron oxide, an oxyacid of boron, and its alkali metal salt in a molar ratio of magnesium to boron of about 1:4-1:1. About 10-95wt% based on total amounts of a melting agent is added to the reaction mixture, and the reaction is carried out under heating at about 600-1,000 deg.C, to form whisker of magnesium borate. The reaction product is treated with water to remove water-soluble components such as melting agent, etc., and by-products such as fibrous material, etc. are further removed by a means such as decantation, etc., the resultant product is washed with an alkali and an acid, and impurities are removed, to give whisker of magnesium borate.
