PURPOSE:To improve the stability of a water-in-oil type emulsion by emulsifying a metal extractant-contg. water insoluble phase and metal ion concentrating agent-contg. water phase in the presence of a specific amphoteric surfactant, thereby forming the emulsion. CONSTITUTION:The metal extractant-contg. water insoluble phase and the metal ion concentrating agent-contg. water phase are emulsified in the presence of the amphoteric surfactant expressed by formula I (R, R' denote a hydrocarbon group of 8-20C; (m), (n) denote integer in the range of 1-10; X denotes a halogen atom.) to form the water-in-oil type emulsion. This emulsion is dispersed under stirring into a metal ion-contg. aq. soln. to extract the metal ions so that the metal ions are concentrated into the water phase in the emulsion. The emulsion is then separated and demulsified to separate the water phase of the concentrated metal ions from the water insoluble phase.
