The radiation from the halogen lamps (6) is focused by lenses (4) on to opposite sides of a central tank (2) connected by pipes (1) to a water supply. The tank is fitted with a thermostatic probe (11), and the positions of the hot spots (3) are adjustable by raising and lowering of the lamps and lenses on threaded rods (8) screwed into slots in the base (9). Live steam is raised by an external heat source until enough surplus electrical energy is generated to supply the lamps, rendering the system self-sustaining. Condensate from the turbine is collected and returned to a recovery tank.
