A method is claimed for the electrochemical characterisation of an electrolyte, used in controlling electrolysis processes, comprising the passage of the electrolyte in a test cell, anodic and cathodic currents fed via individual electrodes immersed in the electrolyte, a measure of the overvoltage of an electrode with respect to a reference electrode using a bipolar electrode defiling through the electrolyte. The hydrodynamic conditions and current densities in the test cell are identical to those in the industrial electrolysis cell and allow study of the relationship between the actual current density and the diffusion limiting current density which together with the temperature allows establishment and control of the electrolysis conditions needed to produce a specific metallographic structure in the process undergoing control. The device for applying this method is also claimed.
