An apparatus for coating a hollow object at precise bands within the internal cavity of the object, and the resulting product. Selected portions of the internal cavity (19) of a hollow object, such as a threaded fastener (4), are coated using a rotating probe (170) having at least one opening (176) through which fluid coating material is dispensed by centrifugal force. The probe (170) moves vertically up and then down through the fastener (4) while fluid, moved through the probe (170) by a metering pump (75), is dispensed over a predetermined portion of the path. A computer controls fluid pumping rate, and a vertical movement and rotational speed of the probe (170) to precisely coat a band on the internal cavity (19) of the fastener (4). One product that can be made by the inventive process is a fastener nut having threads coated with "Teflon".
