A process is proposed for coating household and kitchen appliances such as pans, pots, baking trays, hotplates, browning plates, irons and the like with a non-stick layer. Firstly, a surface of a bottom of the kitchen appliance is roughened up. Then, the roughened-up bottom is coated with an alloy layer in a high-speed process. A mechanically resistant material is applied on the alloy layer using the plasma spray process. On the mechanically resistant material a non-stick layer is applied in such a quantity that the porous mechanically resistant layer is just saturated. The alloy layer applied using the high-speed process brings about a complete sealing of the metallic base body of the appliance so that even over a long period of use no agressive chemicals, for example washing-up liquid from dishwashers, can penetrate into the region of the metallic base body. Blistering of the metallic base body is avoided with certainty in this way.
