Process and device for continuous casting of strips and bars (34) of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, at least one wall of a casting chamber (14) being formed by a flexible continuous casting belt (15, 16) which runs off a coil (26, 27), is passed through the casting chamber and, after leaving the latter, is wound up again into a coil (23, 24). A tensile force is transmitted to the continuous casting belt in the direction of motion, the said force being so high that the elastic limit of the belt when heated in the casting chamber is exceeded, the belt being stretched to such an extent that the increase in the cross-sectional area due to heating is sufficiently compensated by the reduction in cross-section brought about by the stretching of the belt.
