The audio equipment e.g. a radio receiver, cassette player, communications transceiver, radio-telephone, etc. is mounted in the central console between the dashboard and the transmission tunnel. Two U-shaped steel elements, connected by welded rods, pass in front of the equipment. The ends of the elements are fixed to the body of the vehicle. The steel assembly physically prevents the removal of the equipment. A pivoting hook is fixed into the middle of the protective frame. When the vehicle is to be left in a vulnerable position, the driver selects reverse gear and inserts the end of the hook into an aperture on the front of the gear lever. A key is then used in the ttop of the gear lever to lock the lever in position.
