Bricks after leaving the kiln are stacked in a required packet, a and placed on a stacking table. A lifting device then moves the packet to a strap-tying mechanism. The stacking table may form part of a carousel type rotary table. The stack of bricks (6) is built up of adjacent layers (7) to form a parallelepiped shape. Recesses (8) are formed to receive the teeth of the lifting mechanism. The stack edges are covered with L-shaped cross-sectioned plastics strips (9). A strap (10) is securely tied around each layer.
