This 'stEp-up' converter is of the type which uses the energy stored in an inductance (SP1) to charge a capacitor (C1) via a diode (D1), using a MOSFET (T1) to interrupt the current from a d.c. source (B). The energy stored in the capacitor is then discharged through the load (R1). Additional components are used to permit a higher working frequency and consequent higher conversion efficiency. An additional diode (D2) is connected between a tap (S6) on the main inductance (SP1) and the output (S3), and an additional inductance is interposed between the MOSFET and the free wheeling diode (D1). The additional diode increases the charging period and the additional inductance acts as a current limiter. Similar techniques can be used with a 'step-down circuit'.
