Process for isomerising isomerisable hydrocarbons comprises contacting them in presence of H2 at isomerisation conditions with a catalyst compsn. comprising a Gp. VIII metal, H mordenite and refractory inorganic oxide, and having a surface area of at least 580 sq. m/g. Isomerisation is pref. effected at 200-800 deg. F, 100-1000 psi, LHSV 0.5-5 w.r.t. catalyst vol. and H2/hydrocarbon = 0.5-5 molar. The surface area of the formed catalyst composite may be increased to 580 sq. m/g or more by: (i) opt. drying and/or calcining; and (ii) contacting with an aq. acid contg. NH4+ ions, e.g. 2-5M strong mineral acid and 1-3M NH4Cl, pref. at 122-203 deg. F for 1-3 h. Or components of initially high surface area can be used in the composite.
