The protective device for the nozzle comprises a casing which encloses the nozzle nd a spring mounted plate (pref. ceramic) with a hole. The plate is retained with the casing by a stop. The stud is fed to the work position in the nozzle. The pistol is pushed against the work piece so that the end of the stud bears upon it. The welding operating is performed and the plate (10) protects the workpiece from sparks, molten material etc.
