A method of constructing a retaining dam for river power plants provides for abutments 3 to first of all be erected at the two banks of the river, after which the river bed lying between the abutments is excavated and two rows of piers 7 are erected between the abutments. The intermediate spaces between the piers are closed off on the inflow side by transverse elements 9 which extend only just above the river bottom. Superstructures, e.g. locks, shields or the like, are then anchored on the piers 7. The retaining dam constructed in this way is similar to a bridge with several bridge piers which form turbine or throughflow zones. IMAGE
