Process for the preparation of aluminium chloride by carbochlorination, according to which an operation of calcining a mixture of particles of a substance containing alumina, of particles of a carbonaceous substance and of a binding agent is carried out, and an operation of chlorination of the calcined mixture is then carried out using a gaseous composition based on chlorine containing oxygen, characterized in that the proportions by weight of substance containing alumina, of carbonaceous substance and of binding agent in the mixture is controlled so that the carbon/oxides weight ratio after calcination is between 1 and 1.3 and in that before calcination the mixture is made into the form of agglomerates between 3 and 10 cm in size.
