BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM INCLUDINGMEANS FOR DISTINGUISHING BETWEENRECHARGEABLE AND NON-RECHARGEABLE BATTERIESABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA battery charging system is provided whichdistinguishes between primary and secondary batteriesby sensing a charging or discharging parameter of abattery placed into the system. A sensing means isincluded in the system which senses the value of atleast One parameter of the battery. The parameter hasa value for secondary batteries which is distinctivefrom its value for primary batteries. In response toan indication from the sensing means that the batteryin the system is a primary battery, an enabling meansdisables charging of the primary battery by thesystem. The enabling means, in response to anindication from the sensing means that the battery inthe system is a secondary battery, enables charging ofthe secondary battery by the system. One batteryparameter which is particularly useful indiscriminating between primary and secondary batteriesis the low frequency impedance of the battery duringcharging.
