COUNTERFLOW TUBULAR HEAT EXCHANGER HAVING CENTER PIPE CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACTA tube type counterflow heat exchanger adapted for hightemperature service. The heat exchanger contains a tubebundle having a central pipe construction used for intro-ducing a hot inlet gas into the exchanger, so as to minimizethe temperature to which the primary pressure boundary shellis exposed and also cause minimal differential thermalcontraction of the tube bundle. An annular space containinga thermal sleeve is provided between the center pipe and thetube bundle inner shell for passage of a minor flow of gastherethrough to heat the inner shell and thus minimize thetemperature difference existing between the inner shell andthe tubes. Any excessive differential expansion whichoccurs between the inlet end tube sheet and inner shell isaccommodated by an expansion joint.
