- 28 -ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OFAN AMORPHOUS METAL OXIDE COMPOSITEThe invention provides a method for the preparationof a metal oxide composite, e.g. silica-alumina, havinghigh uniformity and porosity in structure. The inventivemethod comprises forming a homogeneous solution of at leasttwo kinds of oxygen-containing organic metal compounds,e.g. metal alkoxides, in a solvent mixture containing apolar compound having multifunctionality or coordinativelycrosslinking power, e.g. hexyleneglycol, together withadmixture of water to cause cohydrolysis of the oxygen-containing organic metal compounds so that the homogeneoussolution is converted into a sol and then into a gelledcoagulum followed by drying and heating the coagulum todissipate the polar compound. The method is applicableto the preparation of a solid catalyst containing a highlydispersed, catalytically active metal as one of the integralcomponents in the metal oxide composite by the admixtureof a readily reducible salt of the catalytically activemetal to the solution before hydrolysis and heating thegelled coagulum impregnated with the metal salt in areducing atmosphere to reduce the salt into the metallicform.
