A steelmaking process in an oxygen-blown converter using ferrous metallic materials in solid form and molten pig iron consists in charging the ferrous metallic materials into the converter, heating them up to a temperature short of the melting point by means of combustion of hydrocarbon and carbonaceous fuels introduced into the converter in a stream of an oxygen-containing gas, where the amount of the hydrocarbon fuel fed from the bottom is confined to a limit of 1.5-6.0 kg of equivalent fuel per tonne of the ferrous metallic materials in solid form subjecting these materials to a homogenizing blast of a neutral gas introduced from the bottom before pouring the molten pig iron into the converter.
