Process for the preparation of gamma-undecalactone from omega-undecylenoic acid

Known processes involve large amounts of concentrated sulphuric acid as catalyst, where a variety of undesirable side-reactions take place while imparting a dark colour to the product, and several washing steps being required. The novel process is intended to result in a pure product while reducing the washing steps. The present process employs strongly acidic ion exchangers which are stable under reaction conditions. The process is less complicated and provides good yields. Preparation of gamma-undecalactone for the manufacture of odoriferous substances.
