Process for the preparation of zirconium tetrafluoride by reacting a fluorinating agent with a zirconium compound, characterized in that the zirconium compound complies with the formulae : Zr(RBH3 )4 or R'x (BH4 )4-x Zr where R denotes a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl radical, a cycloalkyl radical, a cycloalkenyl radical or an aryl radical, R' denotes a cycloalkenyl radical and x is equal to 1, 2 or 3.
