The fractions contain polypeptides possessing a molecular weight, respectively, of the order of 125,000 daltons for HSV-1 and of the order of 46,000 daltons for HSV-2, these polypeptides react positively with rabbit monospecific anti-HSV-1 antiserum and with rabbit monospecific anti-HSV-2 antiserum, respectively, and they are identified by immunotransfer as HSV-1 glycoprotein gC and as HSV-2 glycoprotein gD.
