Process for removing heavy metal and/or alkali metal cations from aqueous solutions by means of an ion exchange material, which contains a cation exchanger charged with alkaline-earth metal ions, and for subsequently regenerating the charged or exhausted ion exchange material, characterised in that, for regeneration purposes, the charged or exhausted cation exchanger is brought into contact, either on its own or combined with an anion exchanger, with an aqueous suspension of difficulty soluble carbonates and/or hydroxides of alkaline-earth metal ions and/or natural carbonates which have been wholly or partially burned, and in that CO2 -containing gas is introduced into the suspension.
