The process described is of particular interest for refineries located in the vicinity of existing oil fields. The crude oil extracted in addition in a known manner by the introduction of steam or hot water also contains gas which is called petroleum gas and which consists essentially of methane as well as other combustible gases. According to the invention, this gas is converted into hydrogen using a cracking furnace heated by a high temperature reactor, the vapor being produced by the heat released by the cracking furnace.
