The chlorination of various chlorophenols using gaseous chlorine, to prepare 2,4,6-trichlorophenol selectively. More precisely, the invention consists of a process for the preparation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol by chlorination, using gaseous chlorine, of ortho-chlorophenol and/or of para-chlorophenol and/or of 2,4-dichlorophenol and/or of 2,6-dichlorophenol, characterised in that the operation is carried out in the presence: - of an effective quantity of an organic cation or of a primary, secondary or tertiary amine; - and of an effective quantity of an organic sulphide. 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol is an organic intermediate used especially for the synthesis of plant-protection products and colorants.
