The plant for removing oxygen from water, in particular sea water, has a circulation for a propellant, e.g. nitrogen. The circulation essentially comprises a countercurrent column (1), a catalytic combustion apparatus (11) and a jet pump (7). For the removal of oxygen from sea water which is used for forcing out oil in particular from oil reservoirs below the sea bed, a propellant is used and is brought into contact with sea water in the countercurrent column (1). The oxygen is substantially removed from the laden propellant in the catalytic combustion apparatus (11) with the aid of a combustion gas, e.g. natural gas. The required conveying pressure in the circulation is generated with the aid of the jet pump (7), which is arranged on the pressure side of a high-presssure pump (4) arranged in the outflow (3) of the sea water from which oxygen has been removed. The substantial advantage of the process is that the associated plant requires only a few components. The high-pressure pump (4) is the only movable part of the plant.
